If you look around you, scores of household objects that you use and encounter on a daily basis have been manufactured through plastic injection moulding.
These include mobile phone covers, telephone handsets, sunglasses frames, disposable razors, power tool casings, electrical wall switches, wheelie bins, washing up bowls, medical packaging, car bumpers, television set cabinets, recycling crates, Lego bricks…..the list goes on and on.
Typically, injection moulding benefits manufacturers who are producing parts in large volume. Once a tool is made, the same part can be mass-produced hundreds, even thousands of times in succession. And after the up-front cost of developing the initial tool has been covered, production costs are low; meaning the cost per unit comes down as more parts are produced.
A tool can be used to manufacture one consistent part in a repeating process or be a multi impression tool, which allows for multiple components to be manufactured on the same tool with a single injection.
This means that the injection moulding is also very repeatable, where the second, third and fourth etc. part that is produced is virtually identical to the first piece that rolls off production. In many cases, the produced parts need little to no end finishing because they tend to emerge from the mould in their finished appearance.
This offers substantial advantages to manufacturers searching for a process that offers high levels of brand consistency and reliability in high volumes.
In addition, the plastic injection moulding process results in minimal waste because of the high tolerances found in moulds. Where there is waste, the injection moulding process allows for recycled plastics to be used as they are ground down and melted once again. This is another factor that keeps cost down for manufacturers.
