How we design our parts with recycling in mind

How we design our parts with recycling in mind

Achieving high recycling rates means thinking about recycling at the design stage.

Here at Skar we are committed to producing parts in as environmentally friendly way as possible. This means that when we design a part, we consider not only its functionality but also how to minimise waste and how easy the part can be recycled at the end of its life.

Circular economy

The ability to recycle plastics and reuse them in our manufacturing processes has been helped by advancements that have improved the quality and consistency of recycled materials. There is also an onus on recycling in our sector because plastics have been identified as a priority in developing a circular economy.

Here are a list of considerations when designing a part to be recyclable:

1. Make components from some material

Where possible, make components from the same material and grade as this will aid the recycling process. Where different materials have to be used, use identification marks on each part to help with sorting at end of life.

2. Snap-fit where possible

Where possible, make the components so they snap-fit together rather than them being joined by screws or metal inserts. Also avoid bonding with polyester and polyurethane based adhesives.

3. Avoid coatings

Avoid using protective and decorative coatings, such as paints and lacquers, which hinder the recycling process.

4. Reduce materials

Reduce the amount of material you use in the component by hollowing out thick sections or reducing the density of the material used.
