New and different plastic additives

Here at Skar Precision Mouldings we manufacture a wide range of plastic injection moulded products and components for companies from numerous industry sectors.  In particular, we produce engineering components, medical equipment components and point of sale display items.

Plastics that are used for different purposes have distinctive properties – maybe a product needs to be extra durable and be able to absorb shocks or, if used for medical purposes, less prone to picking up harmful microbes.

To achieve these different outcomes, we supplement our plastics with additives – substances that are added in a polymer to make them more useful or to provide them with specific properties.

As the British Plastics Federation says: “Without additives, plastics would not work, but with them they can be made safer, cleaner, tougher and more colourful. Additives cost money, of course, but by reducing production costs and making products last longer, they help us to save money.”

New innovative additives are being developed all the time and we like to keep abreast of these new products. Here’s a sample of some of the new and different additives out there.

Pigment and antistatic

Danish company Palsgaard offers a range of 100% vegetable-based and food contact approved polymer additives that cover a wide variety of applications for polymer products, including antistatic effects, antifogging, filler and pigment dispersion, mould release and many others.

Its Einar product range is produced entirely from vegetable oils such as sustainably sourced palm oils.

Flame retardant

Spanish firm Tolsa Group produces additives and industrial products that improve performance and efficiency of materials. The company has developed a range of flame retardant additives that ensure reduced smoke production in PVC and rubber polymer systems.

Light barrier technology

Holland Colours has developed the next generation of its advanced light barrier technology for UHT milk packaging. Called Holcomer III, the additive provides 100% UV blocking and up to 99.9% visible-light blocking in a monolayer PET bottle – but with significantly lower costs.
